About Sabrina

Sabrina Avilés began her study of Spanish folkloric dance in her mother’s native Dominican Republic. She continued her training in flamenco dance with Ramón de los Reyes and Omayra Amaya in Boston. She continued her studies in Spain at the renowned studios of Amor de Dios in Madrid; and in Seville with Manolo Marin and Juana Amaya, among others. Recently, she has had the opportunity to study with a new generation of dancers including La Lupi, Leonor Leal, Concha Jareño, David Romero, Carmen Ledesma and Manuela Rios. She was a member of the Spanish Dance Theatre in Boston as well as Omayra Amaya’s Flamenco Sin Limites.

Sabrina has performed extensively throughout New England in major venues such as the Cutler Majestic Theatre in Boston and the Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH. She’s also performed with live orchestras, such as the Worcester Symphony Orchestra at Mechanics Hall and most recently with the Cape Cod Symphony. In 2017, she was commissioned by the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra to choreograph the dances to Bizet’s opera “Carmen.” Sabrina performed live with the full orchestra in January 2018 at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge to a sold-out audience.

In 2009, she launched her performing troupe, “Flamenco Dance Project”, dedicated to promoting and teaching the art of flamenco through concerts and workshops while showcasing the talents of dancers and musicians here in the United States. The troupe performed at Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Series in the summer of 2011 and drew one of the largest audiences in the history of the series.

In addition to her performing experience, Sabrina has extensive teaching experience. Since 1990, she has taught flamenco classes and workshops at many Greater Boston dance schools, studios, and universities. She currently teaches at Tony Williams Dance Center in Boston.

Along with her flamenco career, Sabrina has a parallel career as a filmmaker, working on PBS documentaries and educational videos.
